Bassim Haj – CIO of Yara International
Bassim Haj is Senior Vice President Information Technology at Yara International ASA (YAR-OL), the world’s largest fertilizer company, and based in YARA’s head office in Oslo, Norway.
While Bassim Haj is relatively new to the chemical and fertilizer industry, he has more than 25 years experience in information technology from the Seismic exploration, oil & gas, paper and forest products industry. He spent 10 years in GECO Schlumberger working with marine seismic acquisition data and processing and later led the MIS department until he left in 1989.
He joined Kvaerner Oil & Gas in 1989 and was responsible for business system development, as well as discipline lead for IT(seconded to Conoco) on Heidrun Field development – a major offshore project. In 1996 he moved to Kvaerner Corporate and led Corporate IT, where he was responsible for building, consolidating and integration of Kvaerner’s worldwide enterprise architecture.
From 1999 to 2002 he was Program Director at Equant/Orange (now part of French Telecom), a major telecom provider based outside London.
Bassim Haj joined Norske Skogindustrier ASA (NSI) in late 2002 and he led the efforts of restructuring the IT function at NSI. He also embarked on major enterprise wide business and Information Technology initiatives and projects, including shared services, IT strategy revision and business alignment. The IT governance structure that was implemented scored high in a survey conducted by Accenture (2006) that compared a 37 large enterprises in North Europe.
In March 1st 2010 Bassim Haj was appointed as Senior Vice President, Head of IT & CIO for YARA International ASA.
Today Bassim has overall responsibility for Information Technology and Business Process competency. This includes 150 million Euro in annual spend, 140 employees, 8500 end users, 150 locations in 65 countries in Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, North and South America.
Bassim Haj also has extensive experience in leading IT and business integration efforts during M&A and divestment activities, as well as in setting-up and managing large outsourcing deals in IT and BPO. Bassim has been working on several successful turnaround and transformation programs, e.g. in Norske Skog and Yara. Bassim is most endorsed for IT Strategy, outsourcing, IT management, change management and has strong capabilities in organisation building, governance and business stakeholder management and alignment.
Bassim Haj, manages IT under the banner of Big I little T, with emphasis on information orientation usage, analytics, business process management and improvement.
